BONUS BALTIMARI: Review, Evaluation and Future of Baltic Maritime Risk Management

      Date and time: CANCELLED
      Organiser: Aalto University

The Baltic Sea is an area of intense human activities for transportation, food and offshore energy production. While these activities are important for the livelihood of the region, they also exert pressure on the sensitive sea. There is high risk to humans, wildlife, vessels and the ecosystem as a whole. The environmental impacts of shipping are significant and include, for example, air pollution, sewage discharges from passenger ships, invasive species transported in ballast water or on hulls, and the risk of large-scale accidents, like oil spills. The shipping industry is also responsible for approximately two percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The EU BONUS BALTIMARI project (2019-2020) provides comprehensive reviews of the state-of-the-art risk management strategies and decision support systems for maritime activities, including shipping, in the Baltic Sea with target areas targeted of Maritime transportation systems (MTS) and offshore energy production systems (OEPS). The project also identifies several priorities for future research in risk management based on inputs from various stakeholders.

      Smart logistics towards zero emissions

      Date and time: CANCELLED
Organiser: Rocla Solutions, Limowa and Kouvola Innovation

Data and IT technologies are a key enabler in achieving sustainable logistics, in offering efficient logistics for the circular economy, and finally in enabling supply chain disruption towards a greener world. What kind of models have the Finnish forerunner logistics companies and cities implemented in last mile, warehousing and transportation? How can IoT, AI and blockchain be utilised for sustainability purposes in the supply chain? What are the impacts to the environment and society?

Come to hear cases from Finnish companies and cities, for example:

      • Vaisala: Using artificial intelligence to observe road condition and improve safety
      • Rocla Solutions: How can IoT info boost sustainability in intralogistics?
      • Kouvola Innovation: Distributed data management in supply chains

Research Priorities and Accelerators for Electric, Connected and Automated Mobility

      Date and time: CANCELLED
Organiser: Mobility.E Lighthouse, supported by the COSMOS project (Coord.: VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH)

Increasing levels of vehicle electrification and automation engender fundamental changes along the entire automotive value chain that require both a continuous prioritization of technical research topics and extensive networking between a progressively diverse stakeholder group. Thus the Mobility.E Lighthouse, a networking and collaboration platform of the ECSEL JU serves to connect stakeholders along and beyond the automotive value chain, bringing together the Electronic Components and Systems (ECS) and application side as well as non-technical experts to ensure European competitiveness for ECA mobility and to meet the demands of the 2030 customer.

The COSMOS project supports the Mobility.E Lighthouse with the continuous identification and prioritisation of technical and non-technical research topics within a strategy development process. Within a first step, research activities and strategies have been mapped to define the ECA mobility ecosystem and the corresponding R&D&I gaps have been analysed. Building upon these results, research priorities have been discussed and need to be further interactively validated and revised with experts of the field to finally derive an implementation plan, containing concrete actions to accelerate the implementation of ECA mobility solutions and to provide input to (updates of) European ECA strategies.

For this purpose, we would like to organise a side event to bring together all technical and non-technical ECA stakeholders to actively participate in the strategy development by prioritizing and validating highlighted R&D&I gaps in the ECAD field and to shape the successful implementation of ECAD in Europe.

Therefore, the event will cover the following agenda items:

      1. Mobility.E Lighthouse: Introduction, activities and results
      2. Validation of R&D&I topics and derivation of necessary actions within an interactive session
      3. Next steps, events and discussion

      State-of-the-art Technology Infrastructures

      Date and time: CANCELLED
Organiser: VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd

Achieving carbon neutral transport requires also development of novel technologies and scaling new solutions to enter the market. Technology infrastructures refer to the facilities, equipment, capabilities and support services for developing, testing and upscaling technology for competitive market entry. Examples of such infrastructures could include facilities for development of batteries, fuel cells, drivetrains, as well as performance validation of various vehicle types. In addition to electrification and hybridization solutions, hydrogen, biofuels and other renewable fuels require R&D infrastructure. Hardware-in-the-loop and validation of digital models are among the modern development tools.

Parallel to the technological transition, new operational models and public-private partnerships are emerging for sharing the benefits, including national testbeds, de-centralized infrastructures and other co-operation models. Presentations on the topic will share insights from different stakeholders. We welcome you to network, and encourage discussion on the coordination of the technology development facilities for transport sector.
